Effects on Global Forests and Wood Product Markets of Increased Demand for Mass Timber

This study evaluated the effects on forest resources and product markets of three contrasting mass timber demand scenarios (Conservative, Optimistic, Extreme), up to 2060, in twelve selected countries Asia, Europe, North America, South America. Analyses were carried out by utilizing FOrest Resource Outlook Model, a partial market equilibrium model global sector. The findings suggest increases softwood lumber production 8, 23, 53 million m3 per year under Conservative, Extreme scenarios, respectively, leading world price 2%, 7%, 23%, respectively. projected increase is relative reference scenario, altering prices, production, consumption, trade products, harvest, growth, stock individual countries. An prices due increased would lead reduced consumption for traditional end-use (e.g., light-frame construction), suggesting likely strong competition between construction industries. In contrast, effect was relatively small based fast biomass growth stands assumed be regenerated after harvest.
